about

Much the same as young people today will remember the Coronavirus Pandemic of 2020 as a life-changing event, those who lived in the Deep South nearly a century ago were forever affected by the catastrophic Mississippi River Flood of 1927. When I was a kid, my grandparents and their contemporaries spoke of the "Flood o'27" as if it were a recent event, and I heard it brought up often in their conversation.

Mer Rouge, Louisiana, 40 miles from the big river, was less than two miles short of the hills that marked dry land at the western edge of the Delta floodplain. Homes were ruined, farmers and merchants were put out of business, and some people were prompted to pack up and leave. It was the last straw for countless African-American families, who joined the great migration to northern cities already in progress.

Hassell Clark, Jr. was a boy of thirteen when the flood hit. True to his penchant for giving evocative geographical and meteorological titles to the electronic music he produced decades later, it makes sense that he would make reference to the tension and dread of unstoppable high water with the moody synthesizers and organ drones heard in this piece.
