"Your daddy was the one that started me on all the electronics. He came back from Germany with that shortwave radio (a Grundig Majestic, purchased during Dad's late-1950s stint in the Army--HT) and we'd sit up listenin' to that thing late at night. Then he got that reel-to-reel machine and made all those tapes of you learnin' to talk--you 'member that? After that, he started buildin' Heathkit TVs and walkie-talkies and stuff. I think he just liked to solder, mostly. He built that synthesizer and played around with it for a while, but pretty soon he was on to something else...thought he could build a damn perpetual motion machine or some crazy fool thing like that. That's when I started worryin' about him. Anyway, I started foolin' around with the synthesizer and the tape machine. There was this one knob I liked to turn on the synthesizer that always reminded me of frogs in about April or May, when they really start gettin' loud." --Uncle Hassell, taped interview, May, 1989.
